Course Overview

Demystify perspective and conquer the complexity of the urban environment in this two-day intensive workshop.

Workshop theme: Buildings and the Urban Environment

Day 1:

We start in the studio with exercises in understanding perspective and practicing best ways to accurately draw complex buildings and streetscapes, working up from light colour washes through to detail and shadows. Students will learn how to render rextures of the city, such as brickwork and masonry, reflections in glass, and tips on how to paint decorative and architectural detail.

Day 2:

Students will practice and develop techniques from day 1 on longer paintings. Tanya will explain the essentials of composition, focusing on managing the illusion of distance and on limiting unnecessary detail. Students can choose to stay in the studio working from images of their own or to paint outdoors from life in the characterful streets and lanes around Art Est.
