The GreenWay Art Prize

Entries are now open for the 8th GreenWay Art Prize 2017.

Calling all artists! Entries are now open for the 2017 GreenWay Art Prize which celebrates the precious green corridor in Sydney’s inner west and aims to capture the essence of the GreenWay through visual art.

“Now in its eighth year, the GreenWay Art Prize is a much loved prestigious art event which attracts hundreds of entries across a range of mediums including painting, sculpture and photography,” GreenWay Place Manager, Nick Chapman said.

“Artists are invited to submit works for the competition that capture the qualities of the GreenWay and celebrate the urban environment, sustainable transport and community connections through visual art.”

This year a total prize pool of $9,550 is on offer in the following categories:
• Open Art Prize with a prize package valued at $5,000
• GreenWay Local Artist Prize valued at $1,000 open to all artists living within the inner west or City of Canterbury Bankstown council areas
• Cooks River Small Sculpture Prize valued at $2,000
• GreenWay Community Photography Prize sponsored by the Friends of the GreenWay Community Group. Adult: Winner $500, 2nd place $250, and Youth (Under 18), Winner $200, 2nd place $100.
• People’s Choice Award for $500 worth of Derivan Matisse art supplies.

Prize winners will be announced at the opening night of the GreenWay Art Exhibition to be held on Thursday November 2 at Art Est.

Selected works will then be exhibited as part of an expanded touring exhibition at the Seaview Gallery, Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design (20 – 25 November) and Canterbury Bankstown Arts Centre (5-19 December).

Judges for the event are Vandana Ram, Director of the Bankstown Arts Centre, Rod Simpson, Environmental Commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission, Perdita Phillips, artist (WA).

All framed artworks or works on canvas must be ready to hang and fall within one of the following broad categories of painting, drawing, and printmaking. Works submitted for the Photography Prize should also be ready to hang. Small sculptures submitted must not exceed 45cm in width and/or depth and/or height and must be able to be displayed on a plinth.

The GreenWay Art Exhibition is hosted by Art Est. Art School and Gallery in Leichhardt, and is sponsored by Inner West Council and City of Canterbury Bankstown Council, Art Est. Art School and Gallery, Cooks River Alliance, Friends of the GreenWay and Derivan, maker of fine artist materials.

The GreenWay is an urban green corridor linking the Parramatta River at Iron Cove to the Cooks River at Canterbury. It winds through the heart of Sydney’s Inner West and takes in parts of Leichhardt, Marrickville, Ashfield and the City of Canterbury council areas. Following the route of the recently extended Inner West Light Rail, the GreenWay features bike paths and foreshore walks, cultural and historical sites, cafes, urban bush caresites and a variety of parks, playgrounds and sporting facilities.
