FAQS | Online Classes

What technology/equipment do I need?

To participate in our online class you will need 1) a desktop, laptop, or tablet with a stable internet connection and 2) a free Zoom account to participate in your online class: This is a cloud-based video service.

For teen and adult online term courses, you will also need 3) a smartphone to take a photo of your work and upload it to Padlet. This is an online bulletin board that will be used to showcase student artworks, receive constructive feedback from your tutor and enhance online class discussions. This will be used alongside Zoom.

For more information on what you need and tips on setting up, we have created a Guide to Online Art Classes. Click here to see our guide to online learning.

I have never used Zoom/Padlet before, can someone help me?

Please read our Guide to Online Art Classes. This is a handy guide that will tell you what you need, tips on setting up and includes links to video tutorials.

Do note: as we are a small team, we do not have dedicated tech support and students are responsible for their own equipment/technology, however, if you are still having trouble after reading our guide, email us art@artest.com.au or call us and we will do our best to help. ↑ back to top

How are online classes structured differently to their in-studio counterparts?

Our online classes do not simply imitate our studio classes because we understand that learning from home is different. We carefully consider age groups, materials and adapt the structure and constructive feedback mechanisms so that you can still receive high-quality tuition from the comfort of your home.

There is a lot that goes into our online class planning but for example, online classes are often shorter in length to adapt to attention spans, have a different technique or material focuses for easy participation at home and have dedicated tutor feedback time via Padlet as “on the fly” conversations are less frequent online. ↑ back to top

Will I still recieve constructive feedback in an online class?

Yes, and for our teen and adult classes, we have a dedicated platform for this called Padlet. As an online bulletin board, tutors and students can upload pictures/videos/files of their work to share and discuss tasks in a private class Padlet. Tutors will be able to give them constructive feedback in real-time by looking at these shared documents. Padlet will be used alongside Zoom to enhance online class discussions and to encourage group learning.↑ back to top

We send our online link approximately 24 hours before your first class. If you have not received this, please email us art@artest.com.au or call us. ↑ back to top

No, the tuition fee covers one person unless stated otherwise. Our tutors have carefully designed their classes and tasks around the class size and to allow time to give everyone the individual attention they deserve. ↑ back to top

My child is not 5 yet, can they do a class?

Children must have already turned 5 AND be at primary school. We do not accept pre-schoolers. The exception is at the January School Holidays where children will turn 5 AND will be starting Primary School. We recommend these kids attend just 1 × 3 hour session per day rather than a full day. ↑ back to top

My child is older/younger than the listed age range, can they still do the class?

Our class content, class pace and materials are age appropriate, so we do recommend you follow this to ensure the best possible experience. However, if children wish to be with siblings or friends who are in different age brackets, we can offer some flexibility.

We allow a child to move down age brackets as long as your child understands there will be younger kids and this does not worry them (e.g. a 9 year old child can move into a class for 5-7 years).

If moving a child into an older age bracket, we limit this to one year higher (e.g. a 7 year old child can move into move into a class for 8-10 years). We limit the age range when moving children up because younger kids (even if they are mature for their age) can get overwhelmed and frustrated as the class pace is faster and they may not at the same skill level. ↑ back to top
