Course Overview
Wanting to paint with watercolour but either struggling to begin or getting confused and dispirited? Then this hands-on workshop is for you.
Workshop theme: Back to Basics
In a structured day of demonstrations and practical exercises, Tanya will guide you through the essential techniques of watercolour and how this beautiful medium works. You will learn how to manage bleeds and blends working in wet and dry, how to organise a palette and mix colours from a limited number of pigments. You will learn about the different pigments, brushes and paper and will finish the day with the confidence to tackle subjects of your choice. This workshop is great for total beginners to painting and also for artists in other mediums who are new to watercolour painting.
What to expect
Each workshop is designed around particular themes and goals, with exercises and ideas to practice a full range of watercolour techniques. You will learn the methods of the masters and of contemporary artists, and Tanya will guide you to develop your own style.
Workshop Delivery
This workshop will be studio-based with students working from still-lives in the studio or from photographic images

Recommended Material List
- Paper: 1x Large sheet of watercolour paper: 56x76cm 100% cotton 300gsm Cold Pressed (medium or intermediate surface type) (eg Arches, Fabriano or Waterford - make sure it's 100% cotton)
- Paints: Students are welcome to bring previously owned paints. Tanya recommends artist-quality brands, such as Windsor and Newton, Daniel Smith, Shmincke etc...
- Paint Colours: A basic palette of warm and cool reds, yellows and blues, for instance: Lemon Yellow, Raw Sienna, Cadmium (or Windsor) Red, Permanent Rose, Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo (or Prussian) Blue.
- Paint Brushes: 3x soft watercolour brushes sizes 4, 8, 12
- Pencil, Rubber, Sharpener
- 1 Roll of Kitchen Paper/ Rag/ Towel
Or if you are new to watercolours and are not ready to invest in brushes and paints, add the Watercolour Materials Fee to your cart and we will supply what you need to use in class for this workshop. You will still need to BYO a sheet of watercolour paper.
