A new weekly watercolour class for students of all abilities. This is an opportunity for you to bring images and projects of your own to the studios and to learn the techniques you need to complete the watercolour works of your choice. Tanya will work individually with students at their level, encouraging experimentation and the development of each student’s personal style.

What to expect

Studio sessions may begin with demonstrations and technical instruction by Tanya that is relevant to the group, and group critique sessions will form a regular part of the course. In discussion with the group, the course might include group sketch sessions, or a day in the field working plein air.

What you will learn

  • Tanya will share and teach a full range of watercolour techniques both past and contemporary and introduce students to the skills and artists that will inspire their progress.
  • Students can expect to learn and expand their knowledge of watercolour painting, through experimenting with different papers and surfaces, with a range of pigment and palette combinations, and by practicing the techniques of the masters and of contemporary watercolour artists..

Is this course right for me?

Beginners to watercolour painting are welcome, as well as more experienced artists. Some drawing experience is helpful.

Paints

  • Watercolour Paint Colours: tubes or dry watercolour palettes in a range of basic essential colours:
  • Pthalo blue (Windsor blue green shade), Ultramarine blue, lemon yellow, Quinacridone gold, permanent rose (or Alizarin Crimson)
  • Students are welcome to bring other colours you have or any preferred colours. Handy additions might include: Pthalo green (Windsor green blue shade), Cadmium red.
  • Your tutor recommends brands like Winsor and Newton, Schminke, Daniel Smith (or equivalent quality). Student quality watercolour paints are cheaper but are made with inks and synthetic dyes, not pigments. They don’t last as long or work as well and the colour quality is not good.

  • Palette: One 6-8 pan palette (deeper pan watercolour palettes are recommended
  • Paper: Ideally, a mix of
    - cheaper watercolour sketch paper (min weight 200gsm). Common brands are Reeves and Canson.
    - 300gsm, 100% Cotton, cold-pressed, medium grain watercolour paper. Common brands are Arches and Fabriano. Large sheets can be cut to size.
    -  Please bring a range of pre-owned and preferred papers if you have them.
