This 8 week course is designed for intermediate to advanced artists who want to elevate their landscape watercolour painting skills to a professional level. This comprehensive course covers advanced techniques, compositional strategies, colour theory and different artistic styles by which participants can develop their unique voice in landscape watercolour art. 

Saba Manesh is a watercolour artist, originally from Iran who trained in watercolours as part of her degree in Urban Design. "Watercolour is my passion, and each painting tells a story of places I've explored and tried to depict emotions I've felt and the connection I have with the world around me as an artist and landscape architecture. My art is a reflection of the seasons, the landscapes, and the beauty that exists everywhere either in a landscape or a bunch of flowers."

Week 1: Course Introduction and Materials

  • Overview of course objectives and structure o Discussion of advanced watercolour techniques o Introduction to high-quality materials and tools for professional Landscape and Urban painting o Brief Introduction to colours indicators: Transparency, Lightfastness and Staining

Week 2: Introduction to colour indicators: Transparency, Lightfastness and staining

  • Introduction to sketching on watercolour paper without damaging the texture of watercolour paper 
  • Instruct students to select and modify reference photos for compelling compositions

Week 3: Introduction to lights and shadows

  • Instructing techniques for creating atmospheric perspective in landscapes 
  • Advanced methods for painting different sky conditions, clouds and the atmosphere

Week 4: Painting Landforms and Textures + Creating depth and texture through layering)

  • Students will learn how to use different techniques for painting various landscape elements, such as mountains, forests, rocks and water

Week 5: Capturing Reflections and Water

  • Creating water textures, including ripples, waves and reflection

Week 6: Combine rapid pens with watercolour

  • Students will learn how to create advanced composition and planning by introduction to principles of composition when combining ink and watercolour

Week 7: Planning

  • Students will learn how to plan the artwork and decided where intricate details should be added by using the rapid pens

Week 8: Layers and depth

  • Students will learn how to use the pens to create layers and depth within their artwork. 
  • Learn cross-hatching, stippling and other shading techniques to give their work more dimension

Materials Required

  • High-quality 100% watercolour paper, approx. A3 size
  • One A3 size pad of good quality cheaper watercolour paper
  • Buy quality paints such as Mijello Mission Gold Water Color Set, 24 Colours
  • Montmart dragger brush,  5/8 or 3/8 or both, Round pointed shape watercolour brush number 8 and 10 (Officeworks has a good set for $13.60), Natural hair brush (pointed) size 10.
  • Kneadable eraser and H2, HB pencils.
  • Box of tissues
  • Lightweight Sketch Board
  • Masking tape
  • A set of waterproof Uni Pin Fine liner Technical Drawing Pen
