This 8-week course is designed for art enthusiasts who want to explore the beauty of floral art through the medium of watercolours. Throughout the course, participants will have the opportunity to work on advanced techniques, experiment with different styles, and receive personalized feedback and guidance from the tutor.

Saba Manesh is a watercolour artist, originally from Iran who trained in watercolours as part of her degree in Urban Design. "Watercolour is my passion, and each painting tells a story of places I've explored and tried to depict emotions I've felt and the connection I have with the world around me as an artist and landscape architecture. My art is a reflection of the seasons, the landscapes, and the beauty that exists everywhere either in a landscape or a bunch of flowers."

What to expect

Over the 8 weeks of this course to learn advanced watercolour techniques, you will cover:

Week 1  Overview of course objectives and structure and discussion of advanced watercolour techniques and introduction to high-quality materials and tools for professional floral painting. A brief introduction to colour indicators: Transparency, Lightfastness, and Staining. Students will paint 2-3 different single flowers as a practice.

Week 2  Exploring wet-in-wet blending for soft and seamless transitions Instruct students how to choose the best colours for the background to keep the rhythm and tone of painting. 

Week 3  Floral sketching using soft pencils to create a balanced composition and details. Create a composition that has a focal point and contrast. 

Week 4  In-depth exploration of color mixing techniques for creating intricate flower hues. Paint a bunch of colourful flowers by mixing colours

Week 5  Create depth and texture through layering. 

Week 6  Negative Painting to create intricate details. 

Week 7  Creating a dynamic floral painting with expressive brushwork using dragger brushes. 

Week 8  Mastering Petals with guided practice in painting complex flower petals.

Is this course right for me?

This course is suitable for all levels of artists keen to learn advanced watercolour techniques with flowers as your subject.

Materials Required

  • High-quality 100% watercolour paper, approx. A4 size or A3 size preferable -Arches or Fabriano are preferred brands.
  • An A4 size pad of good quality cheaper watercolour paper 
  • A set of quality paints such as Mijello Mission Gold Water Colour Set, 24 Colours 
  • Montmart dragger brush,  5/8 or 3/8 or both, Round pointed shape watercolour brush number 8 and 10 (Officeworks has a good set for $13.60), Natural hair brush (pointed) size 10.
  • Kneadable eraser and H2 pencil
  • Box of tissues 
  • Lightweight Sketch Board 
  • Masking tape
