Welcome to our Oil Painting for Beginners course, the perfect starting point for your journey into the world of oil painting. Whether you're picking up a brush for the first time or rekindling a passion for art, this course is designed to inspire and equip you with the essential techniques and skills. You will learn about still life painting using a limited palette, starting with primary shapes like cubes, cones, and spheres, and progressing to more complex forms. As we arrange objects in space, you'll discover that the composition of your still-life is the foundation of picture-making.

Under the guidance of our experienced tutors, you'll explore the rich textures and vibrant colors of oil paints, transforming your creative ideas into stunning artworks. Join us and discover the joy of painting in a supportive and engaging environment.

Suitable for those with experience in oil painting or with experience in other mediums and who would like to learn to paint with oils.

Materials List

Oil paints
If you already have oil paints bring what you have to the first lesson. If you don't already have oil paints the following is a good selection of colours that will keep you going (small tubes are fine). Buying cheap paints is a waste of money - we recommend purchasing 'Artist' quality paints. Art Spectrum is a good economical brand.

  • Art Spectrum oil paints are recommended in the following colours: 
    • titanium white, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, raw umber, lamp black,
    • Optional colours: cadmium orange, alizarin crimson
  • Range of flat and round brushes (synthetic) in sizes 4, 6 and 8
  • Painting palette or perspex for mixing (melamine approx A3 size)
  • Medium sized palette knife
  • Lots of rags or a roll of paper towel for clean up
  • A couple of large bulldog clips
  • Refined linseed oil (small bottle)
  • 1 x 500ml bottle of ODOURLESS solvent (Gamsol preferred)
  • One or two jam jars with lids for mixing solvents and cleaning up
  • You will need several canvases or canvas boards over the term. For the first class bring along a canvas or canvas board approx 30x40cm
