Ceramics | Food and Nostalgia Family Workshop with Jayanto Tan
In this class, Jayanto will guide you to make your own Sampuru or lunchbox inspired by your culture and the foods that evoke memories. Be inspired by the textures, shapes, colours and designs of a lunch box (real or imaginary) that could have been packed by yourself, your parent or friend, and create a life-size food clay sculpture. Explore the materiality of clay and have fun experimenting in this workshop for all ages and levels of experience.
What to expect
In this workshop, you will begin with sketching your ideas. Jayanto will help you navigate the design and hand-building possibilities and limitations. You will learn hand-building skills and tips and tricks to make your lunch box.
You will explore of surface decoration techniques including underglazing and texture.
What will you achieve?
During this workshop you will:
- Create a lunch box-inspired sculpture
- Learn the essential hand-building techniques
- Learn professional tips and tricks
- Learn underglazing and surface texture technique
Is this class right for me?
This class is suitable for all levels. Families welcome, though children must be at least 6 years old to participate.
What should I bring?
Please bring your stories and a small plate to share during the half-hour break (lunch, fruit, snack, cake, etc.)
What materials will be provided?
Your materials, glazing and firing is included in your workshop fee.
The course includes a limited number of underglaze colours. All tools are provided for use during class. You are welcome to bring your own tools if preferred.
Will my work be fired?
Yes, your work will first be bisque fired, then glazed in a clear gloss and fired again.
What should I wear?
Clothes you feel comfortable in and don’t mind getting dirty. Clay, underglaze and glaze will wash out. It is best to have short fingernails.

Site Directions
Our new Main Studios are located at 10 Hill Street Leichhardt, an the corner of Hill Street. John Street runs between Moore Street and Styles Street in the 'east village' precinct of Leichhardt near White's Creek Annandale.
Parking
There is no on-site parking. Please allow time to find parking in the surrounding streets. We request you do not park at the lower end of Hill Street as it is a narrow, dead-end street where residents park.
