Watercolour Bootcamp with Susie Murphie
Enjoy sharpening your watercolour skills in this three-day workshop. Susie will address the many mistakes that are so easy to make in watercolour and how to avoid or fix them. And she will teach you how to make your work have more impact and confidence. All while having lots of fun. She will teach you how to control your tone, how to mix colours with subtlety and how to apply the paint so it always looks beautiful and transparent. She will also cover basic and effective drawing.
Susie uses a limited palette of six colours and large watercolour brushes in everything she does. Still life, landscape, flowers, travel sketching ...you will cover a lot of subjects and learn the right way to apply paint so it always looks beautiful.
This three day bootcamp will make a big difference to your watercolour painting skills.
Is this course right for me?
This watercolour painting class is perfect for absolute beginners or those who have previously enjoyed Susie’s workshops and wish to learn tips and techniques for painting with the tricky medium of watercolour. You will come away with a feeling of wonder and addiction to this extraordinary watery paint and be confident that you can tackle anything.
What to expect
In this course you will:
- learn how to keep watercolours transparent and beautiful
- learn tips and techniques for drawing for watercolour painting
- learn about painting a variety of subject matter with watercolour from still life to flowers and landscape using a loose style that does not concentrate on a lot of detail.
- practice working with a limited colour palette to achieve brilliant results
- develop your ability to tackle all sorts of subjects with confidence.

Materials
- Pencils HB, 2B
- eraser and sharpener
- Watercolour paper cold pressed (medium surface/tooth) - pad of A3 or A4
- Watercolour Brushes size 12 and 16; Synthetic round pointed brushes are available at Bunnings craft section for under $5 each and are excellent. You will not need small brushes.
- Old tea towel, soft cloth or paper towels
- Masking tape or clips
- Large watercolour palette – if unsure, just bring a large white plastic or ceramic plate
Susie recommends the following Winsor and Newton paints which are affordable and excellent quality to ensure you get optimum results:
* Winsor and Newton watercolour paints: French Ultramarine Blue; Cerulean Blue; Quinacridone Magenta; Quinacridone Gold; Burnt Sienna; Raw sienna; (small tubes are fine)
