Painting, Drawing and Sculpture Masterclass | Bush and Birdlife with Tannya Harricks | 10+

Join us for a two-day creative adventure with renowned artist Tannya Harricks, where young artists aged 10 and up will dive into the vibrant and diverse world of the Australian bush and its feathered inhabitants. Using a variety of materials such as acrylics, charcoal, ink, and sculpture, students will explore the rich textures and colors of the Australian landscape and wildlife. This workshop is designed to ignite imagination and foster an individual artistic style through hands-on activities and expressive art-making. Join us for two days of artistic exploration and fun, where the beauty of the Australian bush and its birds will come to life through your imagination and creativity!

Day 1: Discover and Sculpt

  • Introduction to Australian Artists: We will begin by looking at the work of your tutor, Tannya Harricks, whose illustrations for picture books Dingo (2018) and Kookaburra (2020) capture the essence of Australian wildlife.
  • Sketching and Planning: Students will start with sketching native bush animals and birds, focusing on loose and expressive techniques. Guided by Tannya, they will experiment with charcoal and ink to create dynamic drawings.
  • Sculpture Creation: Using mod-roc plaster gauze, students will create a three-dimensional sculpture of a native Australian bird, such as a Kookaburra. This hands-on activity will involve building the structure, applying the mod-roc, and forming the bird's shape.

Day 2: Paint and Assemble

  • Acrylic Painting: Students will paint their mod-roc bird sculptures, bringing them to life with vibrant colors and intricate details.
  • Backdrop Painting: Alongside their sculptures, students will create expressive acrylic paintings of the Australian bush, providing a beautiful backdrop for their bird sculptures.
  • Combining Artworks: Students will combine their painted backdrops with their bird sculptures, creating a cohesive and imaginative scene that showcases their work from both days.
  • Gallery Walk: To conclude the workshop, students will present their completed projects in a mini-gallery walk, sharing their creative process and final pieces with their peers.

Workshop Goals:

  • To explore and appreciate the unique flora and fauna of the Australian bush through art.
  • To experiment with a variety of art materials and techniques, including sketching, painting, and sculpture.
  • To develop individual artistic expression and style.
  • To create a cohesive art piece that combines painting and sculpture.

Animals are a regular subject in Tannya Harricks' work and she was commissioned by Walker Books to paint the illustrations for picture books Dingo (2018) and Kookaburra (2020).
