Workshop | Landscape Painting in Oils with Marie Mansfield

This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.

This two day master class style workshop with Marie Mansfield is for students with prior oil painting experience who would like to improve their landscape painting skills. The focus of this two day workshop is painting tonally as it relates to painting landscapes en plein air (ie out in the field). Enjoy two days of working both in the studio and in the field at a nearby outdoor location. You will gain a solid understanding and observing tone and observing light - vital ingredients to improving your painting. With a good understanding of tone and light you can bring atmosphere, distance and mood into your landscape painting.

Please meet at Art Est. where you will do some preparation and your tutor will give you an introduction to the course. The painting location will be advised prior to the workshop, however will be nearby to the studios and you will be able to walk or drive there. In the event of extreme or inclement weather, the workshop will take place in our air-conditioned studios at Art Est.

What to expect

Over the two days students will:

  • produce several landscape studies working en plein air (ie outside).
  • learn techniques of observing light
  • be introduced to a method of mixing colours tonally
  • learn to give your paintings a sense of distance, space and atmosphere
  • learn to see what is there rather than what we know is there.

Is this course right for me?

Some prior experience with oil painting is assumed. This is not suitable for beginners.

Course testimonials:

  • The perfect introduction to Plein air painting. Relaxed, accomodating tutor and great weather to people watch at the park, with easy access to a cafe and toilets. Lovely course.
  • This course was a great experience. The location on day one was beautiful park near ArtEst with lots of views for inspiration. Due to weather, we were back at ArtEst. It didnt matter. We were able to work from photo sources. Marie is a great teacher. She gives demonstrations and guides you throughout your painting to enable you to learn and get the most of the experience.
  • The opportunity to get outdoors and to learn new techniques such as tonal painting in a different environment. Marie's demonstrations and ongoing instructions and suggestions were fabulous. In the midst of Summer we scored 2 days of mild conditions and the venue had a cafe nearby! A very enjoyable 2 days which was a Christmas gift to me and a great way to start the year. Thanks Marie and Artest.
