Ceramic Cups + Spoons the Handstitched Way | Two-part Workshop with Clare Unger

This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.

Join well-known ceramicist Clare Unger in this unique hand-building class. You will create a handmade cup and spoon that reflects your own personal story through textiles and texture.

Clare’s current work is inspired by an inherited collection of textiles, which she began stitching and looking for ways to incorporate into her ceramics practice. Her desire to tell her personal stories and connect with others through shared memories is a powerful driver in the making of her work.

In this workshop, you will learn Clare's processes to create small hand-stitched ceramic 'samplers' to explore patterns and lines using the simple stitches found in Clare's inherited fabrics. This will then form the basis for making your cup and spoon. For more advanced students or anyone who has attended Clare's workshops previously, they can make a bowl or another cup to match.

What to expect

This is a two-part workshop held over two days. Your tutor, Clare Unger, is here to make your experience easy and fun.

Day 1 -  10am-2pm

  • Morning session Clare will show students examples of stitching, then students will design and make their own stitched sampler
  • Short break - bring a snack and a drink for a quick break.
  • Afternoon session Finish stitching, roll out the clay slab, and transfer the pattern by imprinting the clay with the sampler

 Day 2  -  10am-2pm

  • Morning session Clare will demonstrate her slab-building techniques and give hands-on help and guidance.
  • Short break - bring a snack and a drink for a quick break.
  • Afternoon session Complete the cup and spoon using clay textured with the textile mould made in the previous session and/or the sampler. Once leather-hard the cup and spoon can be decorated with underglaze to accentuate the texture.

What will you achieve?

During this workshop, you will:

  • Create a beautiful and very personal cup and spoon
  • Take home your own bisque-fired clay sampler which you can then continue to use in your own projects.
  • Learn Clare's professional tips and tricks for working with clay and texture
  • Learn about glazing and surface decoration techniques
  • Learn from the best — Clare lives in Sydney but was born and spent her early years in Zimbabwe. She has a Bachelor of Fine Art and a Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Ceramics.

Is this course right for me?

This is a class for all levels.  No prior experience required, just your enthusiasm. For students who have attended this workshop previously, you will have the option to make a bowl instead of a cup.
