Ceramics Master Class | Shake it Up with Myfanwy Gullifer

This course has no current classes. Please the waiting list.

Create your own piece of whimsy using hand-building techniques in the fun ceramics workshop with Myf Gullifer. Learn tips and tricks from Myf to add character, visual interest, texture, and meaning to your pieces. This is a one-off opportunity to work with this highly acclaimed artist whose work is met with rave reviews from public and critics alike.

Colourful, joyous and abundant, Walcha-based artist Myfanwy Gullifer’s ceramic sculptures are inspired by everyday objects and her imagination... and delight the eyes and senses.

"In my head I am free to wander, and when I make things, I am just utterly, thankfully free. My hands do the talking, my heart does the thinking and my imagination takes me places that I am very happy to go. There are visual cues and objects around me that spark things, set a train of thought in motion, a feeling, an excitement, a need. A need to express who the hell I am, whatever that may be.

I am not structured about what I do. I don’t mind what anyone makes, they might be happier making either a vessel or a sculpture if it expresses what they need to express. "

In this fun hand-building class you will sculpt and decorate a vessel or sculpture (about the size of a toaster). No experience necessary, as you will be shown various clay sculpting methods. Draw some patterns or create texture in your design and add colour and personality using underglazes ready for firing in our kilns. Every sculpture will be unique and once glaze fired will be display ready.

Myf Gullifer is represented by King Street Gallery on William

What to expect

This is a two-part workshop held over consecutive days. Your tutor, Myf Gullifer, is here to make your experience easy and fun.

Day 1: 10am-4pm: Sculpt your piece and leave overnight to dry.

Day 2: 10am-1pm: Add additional surface decoration and colour to your work using underglazes, ready for firing in the kiln.

Your sculpture will be left to dry further before bisque firing. We will then apply a clear glaze for second firing and will get in touch to let you know when it is ready to collect. (approx 3-4 weeks after your workshop.)

What will you achieve?

During this workshop, you will:

  • Create a sculpture or a vessel about the size of a toaster
  • Learn Myf Gullifer's professional tips and tricks for sculpting with clay.
  • Learn from the best — "Myfanwy Gullifer is an accomplished ceramicist and textile artist whose work is at once cheeky, irreverent, provocative and very very clever. Gullifer’s subversive use of humour often masks a cutting insightfulness into life, but she is also generous with doling out the irrepressible joy contained within her objects"- Belinda Hungerford, Manager, Curatorial and Exhibitions New England Regional Art Museum
