Join the incredible artist and ceramicist Niharika Hukku to learn to paint onto bisque-fired and clay surfaces. Your work will be fired to make beautiful food safe ceramics. No experience necessary!  Niharika is known for her exquisite illustrative designs painted onto ceramics. From flowers and fish, to birds and botanicals - her works gives a new reality to hand built and decorated ceramics.

What to expect

This is a two-part workshop held over two consecutive days. Your tutor, Niharika Hukku, will guide you through her unique process to create a beautifully painted ramen-style ceramic bowl and make and paint your own bowl or plate.

Day 1:  10am – 3pm 
•    You’ll learn how to create a connection between shape of vessel and decoration.
•    You’ll discuss, plan and sketch your bowl decoration.
•    Niharika will facilitate your ideation and encourage you to work with your own ideas and drawings. Inspiration can come from nature (flowers, fish etc.) or can be graphic and/or geometric. 
•    Hand build your own bowl or plate using a mold.
•    Begin working graphically in a single colour or observationally in multiple colours.

Day 2: 10am – 3pm 
•    Discussions about brushwork and tools.
•    Prepare of surfaces and drawing in pencil onto surface.
•    Begin creating a colour palette. 
•    Painting with underglazes on bisque-fired and unfired clay.  

What will you achieve?

During this workshop, you will:
•    Create two beautifully painted bowls, one pre-made and bisque fired ramen-style large bowl and a smaller bowl or plate you create yourself 
•    Learn , Niharika’s professional tips and tricks for painting on bisque-fired and unfired clay surfaces
•    Discuss, plan and sketch your bowl decoration
•    Learn how to create a connection between shape of vessel and 
•    Learn to hand build a bowl or plate using a mold
•    Learn to work graphically in a single colour 
•    Learn to work observationally in multiple colours
•    Learn how to use underglazes 
•    Learn to create a colour palette 
•    Learn about brushwork and tools
•    Learn how to prepare of surfaces and draw in pencil onto surface
•    Learn how to paint on bisque fired and unfired clay  

Is this course right for me?

This is a class for all levels.  Some basic experience is helpful.

Material list

  • All materials are supplied for this workshop and are included in your workshop fee.
  • Your work will be glazed and fired after the workshop and will be available for pickup 2 – 3 weeks later.
