This class is for beginners or those wishing to refresh their skills. In this still-life painting class learn how to bring a sense of reality and atmosphere to your work. Over this 2 day workshop learn the fundamentals of tonal painting by observing light, tone and proportion. You will start with monochrome studies and learn how to mix colours tonally through a series of exercises and demonstrations to build on skills, finishing with studies in colour.

Taught by award-winning artist Marie Mansfield, winner of the 2021 Portia Geach Memorial Award and Finalist in the 2023 Archibald Prize, you will gain insights, learn techniques and build your skills with the best.

Material List

Students will need to have the following:

  • Flat Palette (Melamine or palette paper preferred). About A3 in size
  • A palette knife
  • 3 x canvas boards or canvases of 10x14cm or 10x12cm
  • 1 x 500ml bottle of artist-quality ODOURLESS solvent - we recommend Gamsol
  • Soft rags or a roll of paper towel
  • One or two jam jars with lids for mixing solvents and cleaning
  • Packet of sanitizing wipes: also for clean-up

Paint brushes: Bring your own brushes. I use Neef 95 Synthetic Long Flat Brushes No. 4 or 6 (these sizes will differ with a different brand). Two of each size.

Oil paints: Buying cheap paints is a waste of money - we recommend purchasing 'Artist' quality paints. Art Spectrum is a good economical brand. 40ml tubes will be fine.

Essential oil paint colours:

  • Titanium White, Ivory Black, Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber
  • Cool colours: Alizarin Crimson, Lemon Yellow, Cerulean (Hue will do)
  • Warm colours:  Ultramarine Blue (Series 1), Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red
