Renata Pari-Lewis
Resume
Renata Pari-Lewis is a Slovak-born Australian artist based in Sydney, Australia.
She studied Fine Art in London before moving to Sydney in 2000 and completing her BFA and Masters in Fine Art at the National Art School in Sydney.
Renata Pari-Lewis’ most recent works are an exploration into still life and landscape painting and the points at which they intersect. Not unlike a theatre, her pictures become sets in which inanimate objects move and interact. Spatial planes within the paintings seem on the verge of fragmentation, allowing the histories of a single place to emerge and coexist as her ethereal lines trace their trajectories. This results in a carefully honed balance between a sense of uneasiness and one of vitality and warmth.
Pari-Lewis’ use of acrylic paint, rabbit skin glue, collage and pencil spans a dynamic range from the rich and generous to the extremely fragile. Coming from a background in printmaking, her treatment of surface utilises intense blocks of colour and pattern as well as the ghosting and misalignment of layers to create a frisson of energy. Renata Pari- Lewis’ paintings are neither static nor prescriptive in any way. Rather, they are evocative, intimate, and constantly engaging.
