Watercolours for Everyone | Student Showcase | From 5 August

This exhibition brings together a selection of artworks painted by students of Susie Murphie’s weekly Watercolours for Everyone term course.

Welcome to the world of alla prima watercolour.

Fast and furious fun.

Right from the start we learn how to mix the different tones and we paint from from dark to light. No classic layering. We also learn subtle colour mixing . . . producing endless different colours from a limited palette of just six. Unlike oils and acrylics, it is a medium where you cannot change what you’ve done. First and foremost we learn how to paint quickly and how to make the paint look transparent and beautiful on the paper.

We have a fabulous time with the challenge of this very addictive medium.

This loyal band of students have been with me for years weathering the temperamental hit-and-miss nature of watercolour. They’ve taken on board the mental juggling required and often teach me things too, and bring an assortment of styles to everything we do …no two alike. It is amazing what they achieve.
