The Green Room – when nature moves in | By Nicole Robins

April 26 – 16 May 2021

Traditional basketry techniques merge with a love for organic forms and locally found fibres in The Green Room- when nature moves in, a solo exhibition by Sydney fibre artist and 2020 Greenway Art Prize Winner, Nicole Robins.

Artist Statement

In the face of a global pandemic our connections to the natural world have emerged as being crucial to our wellbeing. Roaming in nature reminds us that we are most at peace when we are aware of our interdependence on other life forms. At the same time our need to act in response to the current climate crisis grows ever more urgent.

Fibre art allows me to create an inner sanctuary that carries my love for nature inside and yet reminds us all of our fragile coexistence.

All artist profits from sales are going to support the work of the Environmental Defenders Office.

About Nicole Robins

Nicole is a (non-Indigenous) Sydney-based basketmaker and fibre artist. She uses traditional techniques from basketry while embracing a range of domestic, native, and non-native plants – mostly grown or found in her local area. She is interested in documenting the plant world we live amongst and how we relate to nature in an increasingly overdeveloped urban environment. She joins many artisans who strive to bring the natural world into our interior landscapes by beautifying and texturizing our living and working spaces.

Nicole has been practising for over 10 years and has been a finalist in the North Sydney Art Prize, Artisans in the Gardens, and the Seed Stitch Contemporary Textile Awards, along with many group and solo exhibitions throughout Sydney. In 2020, she was awarded the 11th GreenWay Art Prize.
