Watercolour Painting Open Studio with Susie Murphie

Course overview

This evening watercolour painting class is designed for those new to watercolours or those with prior experience. In this relaxed and friendly class students bring their own ideas and subject matter to paint or can rely on the tutor to provide subject matter and stimulus for each week’s activity. This makes the class ideal for those with specific projects in mind, whether you want to paint portraits, to landscapes and beyond. It is also a perfect class for those new to watercolour painting wishing to gather some techniques and gain confidence. Susie’s strength is is keeping colours luminous and fresh, and in helping you master the tricky art of watercolour painting through simple and effective techniques.

What to expect

Students can expect to learn how to develop their ideas to produce finished artworks, and will also learn skills and techniques in the magical medium of watercolour painting. Students work at their own pace, and your tutor works with each student individually to develop their own work and style.

Is this course right for me

This class is for beginners in watercolour painting as well as those artists with more experience.

The course fee does not include art materials. Students will need to supply their own materials. Occasionally the tutor will introduce a new medium in class which will be provided.

Students should bring the following to class each week:

Winsor and Newton watercolour paints NB: your tutor has specified this brand which is affordable and excellent quality to ensure you get optimum results. Small tubes are absolutely fine and will last for months, if not years.

The Winsor and Newton colours you will need are:

  • French Ultramarine Blue;
  • Quinacridone Magenta;
  • Quinacridone Gold;
  • Burnt Sienna;
  • Raw sienna;

While your tutor recommends the Winsor and Newton Watercolour range, if you already have watercolour paints bring what you have. Art Spectrum, Daniel Smith, Schminke or Old Holland are also very good. HOWEVER – Cheap paint sets that you find in a discount/variety store do not have much pigment so are extremely difficult to work with and you will not be able to achieve the results you need.

You will also need:

  • Watercolour paper cold pressed – pad of A3 or smaller
  • Large watercolour palette – if unsure, just bring a large white plastic or ceramic plate to your first class and Susie can show you which type of palette is best.
  • Watercolour Brushes size 8, 12 and 16, Synthetic round brushes are available at Bunnings craft section for under $5 each and are excellent.
  • Pencil 2B
  • Old tea towel or hand towel or paper towels
  • Masking tape or clips

Optional (bring only if you have them):

  • Set (12 pencils) of good quality watercolour/Aquarelle pencils (Tutor recommends Faber Castell and Caran D’Ache)
  • Masking fluid
  • Calligraphy/drawing pen
  • Ink(s)
  • Larger range of brushes
  • Different watercolour and other papers
  • Other colour pigments
