Introduction to Drawing and Mixed Media with Laura Jade Hindes

This is a class for beginners and those with some experience who want to try their hand at a range of different drawing mediums and mixed media techniques.

Mixed media involves mixing different creative mediums to break the boundaries between art forms. For example, you might add a sculptural element to a painting, embroidery to a drawing or add paint to a photograph. Students will be encouraged to look at everything as a potential canvas - you could paint a woodblock or make a sculpture out of an antique book!

In each lesson, we will experiment with various materials and combinations of mediums. The goal is to experiment in a playful way to see how different combinations of mediums and materials interact.

What to expect

  • An introduction to drawing and mixed media
  • Guidance and support to experiment with different techniques, subjects and approaches to new forms of expression
  • Exploring subjects such as still life, anatomy, portraiture and botanical drawing.
  • Exploring mediums such as paint, ink, paper, collage, embroidery, wax, pencils, charcoal, stencils.
  • There will be an opportunity to bring in your own found objects or unusual materials to work on a subject of your choosing

What will you achieve

By the end of the course, students will learn:

  • How to play and experiment with a range of mixed media materials
  • Fundamental skills to use a wide range of drawing mediums with more confidence
  • How to approach the different subject matter
