Pottery Wheel Intensive for Teens | 2 day workshop

Course overview

If you’ve always wanted to have a go at throwing pots in clay on the the pottery wheel, then this introductory workshop is a perfect start. In this two day workshop you will learn and practice the basics of wheel throwing pottery! This session is suitable for absolute beginners or those who have a little previous experience and would like to practice under the guidance of a tutor. With only 8 students per class, you will watch tutor demonstrations and receive hands-on instruction.

What to expect:

Day 1

  • watch demonstrations by your tutor who will show you step by step what to do
  • learn principles of best practice in the ceramic studio
  • learn how to prepare your clay (wedging)
  • practise the fundamental techniques of wheel throwing including: centering and shaping
  • practise throwing simple cylindrical objects (pots, bowls, vessels)

Day 2

  • learn and practice trimming your thrown vessels
  • be introduced to a range of basic hand surface decorating techniques (for example sgraffito, rolled decoration and underglazing)

Materials, bisque firing and glazing

Price includes clay, use of our tools, and bisque firing.
Up to 6-8 objects (size dependent) will be bisque fired. Bisque firing will occur during the week after your workshop and work can be collected at a later date. We will notify you when these are ready and you can then book in for one of our glazing sessions. The glazing will add colour and functionality and finish your work and is a small additional $20 fee which also includes glaze (second) firing of your work)

What to bring

Bring an apron and wear close toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting clay on.
Bring a small hand towel
Bring lunch and drinks.

What should I wear?

Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you are relaxed about getting clay on. We suggest comfortable pants/trousers as you’ll sit close to the wheel as you throw.
Please ensure long hair is tied back, take off your jewellery (rings, bangles, watches and long necklaces)

This is a 2 full day workshop.

Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need.
