Pottery Wheel Master Class for Teens

This full day workshop will have you mastering the basics of wheel thrown ceramics. In the morning you’ll learn tips and techniques for centering the clay on the wheel and throwing cylinder forms on the pottery wheel. These will dry out over lunch so that you can trim them and add surface decoration in the afternoon. This class is a fun way to introduce anyone to wheel throwing without being too focused on making everything perfectly symmetrical while learning the basics. A great day in the ceramics studio.

What to expect

Over the day, students will:

  • be introduced to the principles of making ceramics on a pottery wheel
  • learn the fundamental techniques of wheel throwing including centring and shaping
  • practise throwing simple cylinders
  • learn to join forms together to create new and interesting vessel forms.

Wheel throwing is done on a Venco #3 Pottery Wheel. Maximum of 8 students per class.

What should I wear?

Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you are relaxed about getting clay on.
Best to wear cool comfortable pants/shorts as you’ll sit close to the wheel while you throw.
Bring an apron.
We also recommend you trim your nails first (no guarantees that your manicure will last when working with clay!)
