Learn different approaches to landscape painting using the process of monotype printmaking and acrylic painting. Students will learn fundamental landscape drawing and painting skills, and then apply them to the monotype technique using acrylic paints. Weather permitting students will be supervised outside to gain another perspective with 'en plein air' sketching of the local park. Students will learn tips and tricks, colour mixing and improve their painting skills. Working from photographs, you can bring a photo of somewhere special to you or somewhere you have good memories from.
What is a monotype?
A monotype is a print, but with one major difference from other printmaking processes: the artist creates exactly one print, instead of multiples (called editions). This is due to the way a monotype is made.
To make a monotype, the artist applies paint or ink directly onto the plate — which can be metal, glass, plexiglass, or even gelatin. The plate is pressed against the paper to transfer the ink. (So the finished print is a mirror image of what’s on the plate.) The printing can be done with a printing press or sometimes by hand. It’s a simple process that allows for lots of experimentation and variation. After the first print is pulled, there will be some ink left on the plate for a second, fainter ghost print.
What will students take home?
Painted landscape on a canvas and landscapes printed on paper along with an understanding of the process of monotype printmaking.
