Palette Knife Painting | Transform the way you paint | Ashley Frost

Course overview

Learn palette knife painting techniques to achieve tone, depth and texture in your paintings. The workshop is taught by award winning artist Ashley Frost who is known for his palette knife paintings with compositions that use light to capture a fleeting moment in time. Students will paint up to two large paintings using a palette knife while also learning about composition, colour selection and colour mixing.

This class will transform the way you paint! Suitable for anyone who has been painting for a while but would like to learn how to introduce the palette knife into their tool kit. If you have reached a creative block, feel stale or need some technical intervention in the way you paint, this might be the transformation you need. Whether you work in oils or acrylics this one day workshop will give you new skills and confidence to apply to your art practice.

Is this course right for me?

This course assumes some prior painting experience.

Bring your own preparatory drawings, paintings, photographs or other source material to develop ideas and work from your own subject matter.

You can work in which ever medium you prefer. Bring whatever is in your paint kit, but we recommend the following as a minimum:

  • 1 or 2 canvas boards or quality stretchers 50x50cm or up to 90x90cm if working big
OR a few large sheets of quality paper such as Stonehenge, minimum 300gsm and 2-4 large bull dog clips
  • Several palette knives with a metal blade
  • Disposable Painting Palettes
  • Paint rags cut down to about 15 cm pieces and a roll of kitchen paper
  • Paints: Students may use oil or acrylic in this class. Please bring your preferred paints. This guide is for a basic colour kit for oils and acrylics. Please buy good quality paints for the best results. Titanium White, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, French Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue Viridian Green, Raw Umber. We recommend buying ‘artist quality’ paints (Matisse Derivan Acrylics Structure or Art Spectrum oils are good, reasonably priced brands) or brands that have a ‘student quality’ (Winsor & Newton)

If using oils paints
You will need ODOURLESS solvent – at least 500 ml. Solvents MUST be odourless. Oil painting solvents and mediums must not be tipped down the sinks. You will need to bring jars with lids to take away spent solvents/mediums. Spent solvents/mediums must be taken with you and not left in the studios.
