Painting Landscapes, Fast and Loose | Master class with Tim Allen

In this two day painting class, students will take an expressive and bold approach to painting the landscape with guest tutor Tim Allen. Students develop skills to respond artistically to the landscape in an immediate, powerful and spontaneous way. Tim will demonstrate both alla prima techniques in oil paint and layering techniques in mixed media. Students can choose to work with one or both approaches over the two days. The common threads will include mark making, ways of seeing and the surprising amount of planning, technique and thinking that goes into bold and expressive paintings.

Students will come away with a wide range of skills to continue in their own practice. They will have an understanding of techniques with mixed media, including ink, watercolour and pastel and how these can be utilized to capture the essence of a landscape. They will have an understanding of oil painting techniques, particularly alla prima techniques as they relate to landscape.

Tim Allen is well known for his bold, gestural approach to painting and drawing. Winner of the 2017 Paddington Art Prize, Tim’s work has also featured in prestigious awards including the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, Kedumba Drawing prize, the Dobell Drawing Prize at the AGNSW, the Wynne prize for landscape and the NSW Parliament’s plein air painting prize. Tim is represented by Defiance Gallery in Sydney. Tim is also a well regarded art tutor, and we are delighted to welcome him to teach this special two day contemporary landscape painting workshop. Tim’s teaching style is enthusiastic and engaged, with a focus on individual tuition and getting the best out of every student regardless of their experience. He also gives regular demonstrations of his own techniques and processes.
