Narratives in Paint with Craig Handley | Two Day Master Class

Course Overview

We are delighted to welcome Craig Handley to the summer art school to offer students another way of looking and achieving an engaging outcome in their paintings. This unique workshop is aimed at students with some prior experience in oil or acrylic painting who would like to develop their understanding of composition as a tool for visual storytelling within their paintings.

Craig Handley’s paintings are visual snapshots that transcend genres and blur the lines between, realism and surrealism, narrative and observation. In his own words Handley sees his work simply as 'a medley, a collage of all the things I come across while travelling about. They are rearrangements, a hodgepodge of places and objects and light'

What to expect

Students will :

  • learn techniques for developing compositions which may include collage, small models or props
  • begin with drawings then develop these ideas into a painting on canvas/board
  • learn about depth and balance as it relates to composition and as a means to convey feeling or emotion visual narrative
  • be encouraged to embrace ‘mistakes’
  • develop their own painting style and confidence

Is this course right for me?

This course is not for beginners. To get the most out of the course students should have some prior painting experience in their chosen medium. What really matters is enthusiasm to try new approaches to painting.

h.3 What to bring

You are welcome to work in either oils or acrylics in this workshop. Bring whatever you have in your art kit, but Craig recommends the following:

PAINTS: Students may use oil or acrylic in this class. Please bring your preferred paints. We recommend buying ‘artist quality’ paints for the best results (Matisse Derivan Acrylics Structure or Art Spectrum oils are good, reasonably priced brands) or brands that have a ‘student quality’ (Winsor & Newton).

Recommended colours are Burnt Umber, Indigo Extra, French Ultramarine, Cadmium Red Deep, Nickel Titanium Yellow. I’d also recommend two tints, Neutral Tint and Old Holland Warm Grey but these aren’t completely necessary. All these colours are the ones your tutor uses quite a bit but everything can be substituted of course.

If using oils paints
You will need ODOURLESS solvent – at least 500 ml. Solvents MUST be odourless. Oil painting solvents and mediums must not be tipped down the sinks. You will need to bring jars with lids to take away spent solvents/mediums. Spent solvents/mediums must be taken with you and not left in the studios.

SURFACE: 2 x stretched canvases around 20x16 inch / 40x50cm. Prepare your canvas/es with a couple of coats of gesso first.

BRUSHES: Brushes you are comfortable using in a range of sizes.
You can work in which ever medium you prefer. Bring whatever is in your paint kit, but we recommend the following as a minimum:

  • Disposable Painting Palettes
  • Paint rags cut down to about 15 cm pieces and a roll of kitchen paper

Your tutor will supply the reference material.

Maximum of 12 students in all our classes Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need.
