Oil Painting | Paint Your Favourite Things with Jane Guthleben

A new course with award winning artist Jane Guthleben. This is a guided course in still life painting. Students will be taken through the basics of oil painting, beginning with how to construct a painting, with demonstrations of materials, techniques and colour mixing.

Taking a step by step approach, students will start with tonal painting, adding colours gradually to create an individual colour palette. There will be weekly exercises in colour mixing and techniques that students will be encouraged to try. You will step through the history of still life painting, reviewing old master techniques and more contemporary approaches. Students will be encouraged to find their own “voice” through their painting, through their choice of subject matter and development of their own “style”. Emphasis will be on safe studio practices and creation of archivally sound works.

Expected course outcomes

  • Learn skills and techniques to tell stories through still life painting in oils.
  • Learn how to prepare (or purchase) a suitable surface, use composition to create mood, choose colour to convey meaning, and techniques to tell your story.
  • By the end of the course you will be developing your own painting “voice” or individual style.
  • Through weekly exercises you will develop skills to add to your painting practice.
