Experimental Ink Botanicals with Monika Diak

Ink can be a medium that is daunting to approach, but this workshop will focus on how to free your handling of this medium.

Students will be guided through various exercises using ink washes and mixed media that are designed to encourage freedom and looseness.

Using unconventional materials alongside more traditional brushes and dip-pens, students will also learn to balance abstract mark-making and scientific botanical illustration into a harmonious and energetic series of ink nature studies.

What to expect

Students will:

Become more confident in using the ink medium and learn how to draw 'loosely'

Learn how to mix mediums with ink for different artistic effects

Learn to balance abstract mark-making and illustration

Learn how to approach nature studies

This course is suitable for beginners.

Material List

• Heavy mixed-media or watercolour paper, 300gsm+ recommended (A3 or A2 pad of 10+ sheets would be ideal)
• Drawing Ink (Winsor & Newton or Sumi Ink recommended, but any black ink will do)                                                                          
• Series of brushes: (moppy calligraphy brushes are ideal)
• Tubs for water and ink washes (takeaway containers will work just fine)
• Charcoal (willow, compressed or Conte will work)
• Optional: nib-pen or bamboo dipping pen
• Optional: coloured drawing inks such as sepia or olive, walnut ink

Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need. We have a maximum of 12 students per class.
