Course Overview

Immerse yourself in vibrant and colours brushstrokes with the award-winning acrylic artist, Mellissa Read-Devine. In this workshop, we will focus on composition, colour mixing and techniques on how to use your brush while creating contemporary flowers works.

What to expect

  • Mellissa will demonstrate how she starts one of her paintings, including an overview of materials and colour
  • Mellissa will then guide students with step-by-step exercises, teaching them how to simplify shapes and how to create a good composition.
  • Students will then start their own paintings alongside Mellissa. Demonstrations and one-to-one advice will occur along the way.

What you will learn

Students will learn the basic skills and find confidence in creating their own colourful impressionist floral painting.

Materials

Please ensure you have the following:

  • Reference material: if you cannot find a bunch/pot of flowers or garden scene to look at, use some reference photographs that you might like to paint. Please print these out or have them ready on your tablet (Smartphone screens are too small)
  • Stretched Canvas/Canvas Board or 300gsm watercolour paper taped to a board. Recommended size 20"x 24" (55x61cm), or a square format if desired.
  • Acrylic paints: use what you have, but please consider using good ‘artist’ quality paints. Inferior paints do not produce good results. We recommend Matisse Derivan or Atelier brand paints

Optional colour selection: Titanium White, Magenta or Alizarin red, Cadmium red, Pthalo Blue, Cerulean Blue, Yellows (cool and warm), Dioxyzine Purple

  • Drying retarder (optional)
  • Paint brushes: a selection of large and small brushes
  • A palette knife for mixing paint
  • A painting palette – a large flat surface is best
  • Large container for water
  • Rags or paper towel
  • Water spray
