Masterclass | Portrait Painting in Oils with Marie Mansfield

Course overview

Have you always wanted to tackle portrait painting in oils, but you’re not sure where to start? Then this two-day master class is for you. Award winning portrait artist Marie Mansfield will show you techniques of portrait painting through studying proportion and how to paint features by observing tone. At the beginning of the workshop, we will take portrait photos of each student which you will work from as you learn to paint a self-portrait over two days.

  • learn to sketch the proportions of the head and facial structures
  • complete a monochromatic study
  • how to paint the features of the face by studying light and tone
  • learn to mix skin coloured tones
  • learn about working with oil paints
  • paint your self-portrait

In this workshop you will work monochromatically or with a very limited palette.

In 2018 and 2019 Marie is in the Archibald Prize Salon des Refuses, and in 2016 was an Archibald finalist at the AGNSW with her painting of fellow New Zealander Euan Macleod. She is a regular finalist in the Moran Prize, Kilgour Art Prize, Portia Geach Memorial Award, Black Swan Portrait Prize and Mosman Art Prizes
