Expressive Animal Painting with Tannya Harricks

Dogs are a regular subject in Tannya Harricks' work and she was commissioned by Walker Books to paint the illustrations for picture books Dingo (2018) and Kookaburra (2020). In this workshop explore your favourite animal subject in a loose and expressive way. Bring your own dog/animal/pet reference and sketches to paint from and have fun exploring different approaches and techniques to help loosen up and develop your individual approach to painting.

Is this course right for me?

The class caters from beginners to advanced students, at least some prior painting or drawing experience is preferred.

Materials

Prepare a few composition options or poses/angles of the animal. These could be photographs of your dog, cat or other animal in different poses, printed out to A4 size.

Students are welcome to work with their preference of oil, acrylic or gouache paints.

  • Please bring your usual paints, and brushes.
  • Paper (for gouache), canvas paper (for oil or acrylic), stretched canvas or board (for oil or acrylic) - any size is fine, A3 or larger
  • Pencils and paper for sketching
  • Soft pastel or chalk
  • 4 large bulldog clips
  • Rags/paper towel
  • Packet of wet/sanitiser wipes
  • Palette. (palette paper, old plates, plastic ice cream lids, board, perspex etc.
  • Plastic containers for water (for gouache or acrylics)
  • Bring an apron or wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on

If using oils paints

  • You will need ODOURLESS solvent – at least 500 ml.
  • Oil painting solvents and mediums must not be tipped down the sinks.
  • You will need to bring jars with lids to take away spent solvents/mediums.
  • Gloves (optional, but recommended particularly if you are sensitive to oil paints and/or solvents)
