Online | Handbuilding Ceramics | Boho candlesticks with Kara Pryor

Course overview

Enjoy learning to make functional and decorative boho candlesticks in a relaxed, friendly and creative atmosphere with Kara Pryor. Students will be introduced to clay hand building fundamentals: such as coiling and pinching. Using these techniques students will learn how to build their boho candlesticks. Students will also be introduced to a range of creative surface decoration techniques including sgraffito, carving, painting with slips and some glazing. This class does not use the pottery wheel you just use your hands, fingers and simple tools for your hand building to create functional ceramics.

Homework: Do some research on what type of candlestick you would like to create. Kara researches on Pinterest or google, and she draws the design first, although the design may change once underway. But good to have an idea. Candlesticks can be created on a theme you are interested in, ie, garden, trees, birds, shapes, colours, design, so many different ideas.

Yours can be as outrageous as Kara’s, or they can be plain, it doesn’t matter, either way, they will be amazing.

What to expect

You will learn to make the most boho quirky candlesticks ever in this online class taught through ZOOM from our art studio to yours!

Before we begin our Candlestick, we will make a few clay stamps, that you can use later on when adding texture.

We will start with a coils around the cup, as the base of the candlestick and then build up from there using pinch pots, coils and slabs. This will take 2-3 weeks to make, good to have some drying time in between for the structure. You will then underglaze your piece, and maybe apply sgraffitto to some parts of it as well.

Is this course right for me?

This class is suitable for anyone from absolute beginners to more experienced students who would like to learn creative approaches to ceramics. Deep interest in boho, gypsy, indie style is a necessity.
