Online | Drawing for Everyone with Matilda Michell

A fun and relaxed drawing class for anyone who loves to draw, or would like to learn how to draw.

Course overview

Everyone from enthusiastic beginners to those with prior experience are welcome in this relaxed and friendly class. over the 8 weeks students will cover a range of subject matter and learn different techniques for drawing while exploring a range of media. Great to tackle a challenge and come out the other side with new skills and knowledge.

Students will also practice using a range of drawing media that can include charcoal, pencils, ink, watercolour and pastels.

This drawing class is available Monday evenings or Tuesday daytime.

What to expect

Week 1 | Measuring techniques. How to accurately place and proportion your drawing.

Week 2 | Light and shade. The difference between a fall of light drawing and local colour.

Week 3 | Directional lines, contour lines, hatching

Week 4 | Highlights. Representing different surface textures, glass, metal etc

Week 5 | Creating space. How to make something sit closer or further away in your drawing.

Week 6 | Plein air drawing with ink.

Week 7 | Interior drawing with ink.

Week 8 | Invention drawing. Creating compositions from invention. Invention as a tool for generating ideas.

Is this course right for me?

This course is suitable for enthusiastic beginners to those with prior experience. Beginners will be guided through exercises and those with prior experience will be encouraged to extend their skills with more challenges. Suitable for new and continuing students.


Just bring what ever drawing materials you have to the first class and your tutor will discuss with you. If unsure, just bring the following:

A2 drawing pad of cartridge paper or similar
A5 size drawing book for drawings and notes.
2B, 2B, 6B pencils
A roll of paper kitchen towel
2 x large bull dog clips
Masking tape

Your tutor may suggest bringing additional materials to class throughout the term. She will discuss this with you though the term.

From 1 June, some classes will return to studio based learning. Other classes will continue to be delivered online in our Virtual Zoom Art Room. The venue is listed with the class details.

If you are joining a Zoom Art Room class, you will need the following:

• A desktop, laptop, tablet or ios or android smartphone
• An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)
• Speakers, microphone and webcam (wireless or inbuilt)
• Download the free version of Zoom to your device
• Check and test everything before you enrol, and double check the day before your class
