Online | Introduction to Illustration | Tania Mason

Course overview

Have you ever wanted to turn those little doodles into a bigger illustrations? Tania Mason’s 8 week term class is the perfect place to help you get started! This course is for beginners or those with prior experience who would like to explore illustration using a range of media. By the end of the course students will have the confidence and knowledge to approach many aspects of illustration, and come away with a definitive style that suits their interests and tastes.

What to expect

Tania will create a warm and inviting introduction to the illustrator’s toolkit. Students will:

  • learn to use a variety of materials including: ink, pen, watercolour, gouache and mixed media.
  • learn fundamentals skills including mark making, creating texture, line, form, outlining, light and shade.
  • learn about developing compositions, discuss the importance of storyline, ideas, character and subject matter within the image making process
  • learn to embrace happy accidents
  • work across a variety of subject matter

Is this course right for me?

Suitable for enthusiastic beginners and those with prior experience who would like to learn the art of illustration.

Materials needed

You don’t need to invest in expensive materials as the following will give you a great outcome and keep the budget down:

  • Artline markers or Sharpies (fine)
  • Watercolour tube pack (Reeves/Monte Marte)
  • Watercolour brush set (a mix of round/pointy and flat brushes with soft bristles – cheap)
  • Pencil HB + eraser
  • Small bottle of black drawing ink (any brand, not expensive)
  • Arches or Canson watercolour paper pad (185gsm preferred, smooth A3 size)
  • Watercolour Sketch pad (cheap) (A3)
  • 2 ice cube trays or something similar for your palette of paints
  • Masking tape

You’ll also need access to a printer for the print outs.

What to expect each week

Week 1: Artline/sharpies – various sizes – moth
Week 2: ink – black only – banksia
Week 3: watercolour – whales
week 4: watercolour – birds

For the follow-up 3 weeks:

Week 5: gouache – cactus
Week 6: gouache – leaf
Week 7: choose your own medium

From 1 June, some classes will return to studio based learning. Other classes will continue to be delivered online in our Virtual Zoom Art Room. The venue is listed with the class details.

If you are joining a Zoom Art Room class, you will need the following:

• A desktop, laptop, tablet or ios or android smartphone
• An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)
• Speakers, microphone and webcam (wireless or inbuilt)
• Download the free version of Zoom to your device
• Check and test everything before you enrol, and double check the day before your class
