Watercolour Painting and Drawing for Everyone

Course overview

Learn to paint with the tricky medium of watercolour in this relaxed and friendly class. Students will be introduced to a range of watercolour painting techniques and also learn fundamental drawing skills such as observing and drawing shape, volume, perspective and tone. This will all help to make you a better watercolour artist.

What to expect

Students will work across a range of subject matter. Beginners will be guided with instruction and demonstrations and build confidence week by week. Students with prior watercolour experience will be encouraged to broaden their skills with new challenges. Explore ways to be expressive and adventurous in your work and learn how to keep watercolours transparent and bright in this short course.

Is this course right for me?

This course is suitable for all levels from beginner to advanced. New and returning students are welcome.

Materials

Art materials are not included in the course fee. Students should bring the following materials

  • a box of tissues
  • a roll of paper towel
  • a roll of masking tape and/or bulldog clips
  • at least 2 x clean glass jars
  • Soft lead pencil (eg 2B or 3B), eraser
  • Watercolour paper 300 gsm A3 – you will need at least 20-30 sheets to start and will need to restock as the term progresses. A block of Canson Montval 100 Sheets of A3 300gsm paper is very economical for beginners
  • A pad of A3 cartridge paper (Jasart is a good economical brand)

*Watercolour brushes – 1 large round brush, 1 liner brush, 1 wash brush

  • Watercolour paints. Please only purchase good artist quality paints. Winsor & Newton is a good quality, reasonably priced brand. These are the basic colours you should have in your kit: Lemon Yellow, Winsor Yellow Deep (or cadmium yellow), Winsor Red (or cadmium red), Alizarin Crimson, Prussian Blue, French Ultramarine Blue. If you already have watercolour paints bring what you have.
  • 1 x tube of white gouache (Windor and Newtown is a good quality reasonably priced brand)
  • Watercolour pan palette (not a plate)
