Learn to Paint Landscapes from Photos or Sketches with Nicole Kelly | One day workshop

Course overview

This one day painting class is for anyone from beginners to those with prior experience who would like to learn the paint the landscape from photographs or sketches. Students may use acrylics, watercolour, gouache or oil or a combination. Students will work from drawings or black and white photographs to discover new ways of building colour landscape compositions. An informative, relaxing and fun day for anyone who loves to paint, or wants to learn how to paint the natural environment.

Winning the prestigious Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship 2009, Kelly has been a finalist in awards including the Wynne Prize, Redlands Art Award, Tattersalls Art Prize, Black Swan Prize and Portia Geach Memorial Award. She undertook the NG Art Creative Residency France in 2017, AADK Spain Residency Program in 2016, the Bundanon Trust Artist Residency in 2015 and the Cite Internationale Des Arts Residency 2010 and was recently honoured with a solo exhibition at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery.
Her work is represented by THIS IS NO FANTASY + Dianne Tanzer Gallery.

Is this course right for me?

This one day painting class is for anyone from beginners to those with prior experience. To get the most out of the class, students should have at least attended a beginner class or workshop in their chosen medium.


Students may work in either acrylics, watercolour, gouache or oil – bring your paints and brushes of your choice. If you use oil paints, please bring ODORLESS solvent and the paint medium you usually use.

If using acrylics or oils, bring along one or two small canvases (approx A3 size)
If using watercolour, bring a pad of watercolour paper – some good quality and some cheaper quality for quick sketches.
If using gouache bring along a pad of thicker stock paper (eg watercolour paper)

Everyone should bring a sketchbook, or some cartridge paper to sketch ideas out
Something to draw with eg 2b pencils and or willow charcoal
