Oil Painting for Beginners | Sally Mowbray

Course overview

This 4 week term course is an excellent starting point for absolute beginners. Students will enjoy a step by step structured course, building skills and gaining confidence week by week. Students will be introduced to fundamental painting skills using oils, as well as picking up essential drawing skills in an interesting and informative format.

What to expect

Each week students will learn new concepts and techniques. Students can expect to:

learn foundation skills working from simple still life objects and progressing to other genres
learn about paint application techniques
learn about naming, mixing and matching colours and organising your palette
learn different approaches to painting compositions using traditional and contemporary ideas
learn how to look after your paints, brushes and other materials

Is this course right for me*

This course is for absolute beginners new to art, as well as new or continuing students who want to build on their skills before trying other courses.
There are no prerequisites or assumed knowledge for this course.

Students will need to bring the following:
A painting palette (melamine)
A palette knife
1 × 500ml bottle of ODOURLESS solvent
Rags or a roll of paper towel
One or two jam jars with lids for mixing solvents and clean up

Selection of cheap bristle brushes – flat, round, small and large sizes (a set of brushes is usually a good mix).
Sketchbook or visual diary for drawing ideas and compositions (A4 is fine)
Something to draw with (eg Pencils, charcoal)
You will need several canvases during the term – approximate A4 size. This does not have to be an expensive brand. You may just like to purchase an A3 pad of canvas paper which is an economical way to work on studies.

Oil paints:
If you already have oil paints bring what you have to the first lesson. If you don’t already have oil paints the following is a good selection of colours that will keep you going (small tubes are fine).

For the first lesson please bring Raw Umber and white.

Recommended list:
Titanium White or Zinc White, Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, yellow ochre.
COOL COLOURS: Lemon Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue (hue will do)
WARM COLOURS: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue
Buying cheap paints is a waste of money – we recommend purchasing ‘Artist’ quality paints. Art Spectrum is a good economical brand.

For Term 3, our regular classes will return to studio based learning. Some classes will be online in our Virtual Zoom Art Room. The venue is listed with the class details so please check this before enrolling.
