Drawing from the Masters with Monika Diak

This class is designed to teach drawing skills across a range of media and stylistic approaches through the study of master drawings with a mix of still life, drapery, figure and portrait drawing. This term will focus on masters such as Klimt and Degas among others.

What to expect

  • Each fortnight we will choose a master drawing, study the materials and methods that make it successful and discuss its place within the master’s oeuvre more broadly.
  • In some classes, we will make a direct copy from the drawing, examining the use of materials, processes and composition. Then, in the following class, we’ll do our own drawing in a similar style, implementing what we’ve learnt from the previous week and adapting it to our own individual approaches.
  • This course will not only broaden the student’s approach to process and materials but also teach them methods of studying independently so that they gain the skills to progress on their own.

Is this course right for me?

This course is suitable for enthusiastic beginners to those with prior experience. Beginners will be guided through exercises and those with prior experience will be encouraged to extend their skills with more challenges.
