Is this course right for me?

This class is great for beginners, and also those with some experience who want to expand their use of drawing and painting media.

Art materials are not included in the course fee. Students will need to supply their own materials. Occasionally the tutor will introduce a new medium in class which will be provided.
Students should bring the following to class each week:

  • 1x 56cmx76cm 300gsm medium grain watercolour paper
  • 1x pad A4 size cheaper student-quality watercolour paper (10-15 sheets).
  • A5 Journal for compositional sketches and art notes
  • Black ink – waterproof
  • Student or artist quality Gouache paints such as Windsor and Newton or Art Spectrum - Raw Sienna, lemon yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine blue, Titanium White( big size), Burnt Umber ( if you have watercolour paints bring this also or instead of for the first class)

This set of colours is fine to begin with but you may want to add some as the course and your inspiration continue!

NOTE: Please buy as best quality paints as you can afford such as Windsor and Newton, Art Spectrum, Daniel Smith, Schminke or Old Holland. Cheap paint sets that you find in a discount/variety store do not have much pigment so are extremely difficult to work with and you will not achieve a good result.

  • Large deep pan watercolour palette or large plastic plate
  • Brushes: synthetic watercolour brushes are fine: size 4, 8 and 12
  • Calligraphy brush
  • Bamboo reed pen for ink
  • 3 small jars for mixing ink wash with lids
  • Pencil (HB, B or 2B), eraser, ruler, masking tape, sharpener
  • One roll of kitchen roll absorbent paper

Maximum of 12 students in all our classes Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need.

Unless otherwise noted, fees for adult classes exclude art materials.Click here to see a list of local art supply retailers.
