Foundations of Oil Painting with Jackson Davies

This course surveys the fundamentals of traditional oil painting by working through painting projects and discussing the artworks of Old Master painters.

Foundational aspects of painting such as tonality, composition, colour and texture are taught as well as the characteristics of oil painting materials and tools. Throughout the course students will explore essential painting techniques including impasto, alla prima, glazing, scumbling and so on.

Jackson has a Master of Cultural Materials Conservation and his teaching is informed by his knowledge of artist’s materials, tools and techniques. Jackson is an award-winning artist represented by Art2Muse in Woollahra.

What To Expect

  • The course is structured by a series of painting exercises, but classes are also flexible and tailored to the individual student. You will be able to work on paintings over several weeks.
  • In each class, you will be guided through painting exercises and you will receive individual feedback. Jackson is committed to developing a positive dialogue between students to foster a welcoming studio environment.
  • Classes are accompanied by painting demonstrations, analysis of Old Master paintings, and discussions of technical art history studies (the study of artist’s techniques & materials).
  • You can expect an informative, interesting and relaxing course suitable for all skill levels.

This class is suitable for anyone interested in learning about traditional oil painting practice and exploring Old Master paintings. Above all, this class is perfect for individuals who want to extend their oil painting skills and knowledge in a positive teaching environment.

High School students in year 10 and above are encouraged to attend this class.

What students will achieve

Students will :

  • Gain in-depth knowledge of oil painting practices, materials, techniques and Old Master Artists.
  • Learn the fundamentals of oil painting practice and history by working on the following exercises:

Still life
Old Master copy
Project of your own choosing

Material List

We will work with what you have but below are recommended materials:

  • Canvas support: stretched canvas/linen, canvas paper, canvas pads, primed board. Any size, but preferably portrait/landscape format.
  • Brushes: any that you already own. You will need round shaped brushes, preferably bristle. Sizes: 1, 4, 8. Get 3 or 4 of each size. Please feel free to bring any brushes that you already own
  • Rags
  • Palette: wooden or disposable
  • Linseed oil or lean medium
  • Stand Oil
  • Solvent: mineral turpentine or white spirits
  • Lidded jars for oil and solvent
  • Oil paints, essential colours are:

Titanium white
Raw umber
Cadmium red
Cadmium yellow
Lamp black

(You can substitute cadmium colours for spectrum). Other useful colours include: zinc white, viridian, yellow ochre, burnt umber, raw sienna, terre verte. Please bring any colours that you may have or that you enjoy using.)

Please also bring a packet of sanitiser wipes for cleaning your work space as a covid safe measure for others.

Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need. We have a maximum of 12 students per class.
