Course Overview

Tania will create a warm and inviting introduction to the illustrator’s toolkit for beginners through to more advanced artists. A great course for anyone who would like to explore illustration using a range of media. By the end of the course, students will have the confidence and knowledge to approach many aspects of illustration and go away with a definitive style that suits their interests, tastes and purpose.

What is illustration?

The art of Illustration is creating an image to communicate a message or an idea. Illustration can be done in any medium as long as it is a visual representation of something. Examples of where you might find illustration might be in picture books, advertising, magazines, newspapers, instruction manuals, posters for gigs or movies, products like T-shirts or greeting cards and even in fashion and film.

What to expect

Students will:

  • Learn to use a variety of materials including ink, pen, charcoal, watercolour, gouache and mixed media
  • Learn fundamentals skills including mark making, creating texture, line, form, outlining, light and shade
  • Learn about developing compositions, discuss the importance of storyline, ideas, character and subject matter within the image-making process
  • Learn to embrace happy accidents
  • Work across a variety of subject matter

Is this course right for me?

This course is suitable for all levels, from beginners to those with experience.

Material List

Each week students will be introduced to new uses of materials. You will need to bring the following materials, and a list will be supplied at the end of each class for a reminder of what to bring for the next lesson.

  • Lead pencil pack HB/Staedtler preferred
  • Artline technical drawing system/set of 9 pens (size 0.05 to 0.8)
  • 1 Arches or Canson watercolour paper pad (185gsm preferred, smooth A3 size)
  • Sketch pad A3 or A4 size (watercolour preferred)
  • Hard Eraser
  • Winsor and Newton Drawing Inks: black
  • Watercolour brush set (a mix of round/pointy and flat brushes)
  • WaterColour Set (Reeves Water Colour tube set is recommended)
  • Gouache Paint tube options (Reeves Gouache set is recommended)

This course will run online

Due to Sydney’s COVID-19 restrictions, our courses have been designed to run online therefore artists from all over the country are very welcome to enrol.
