Drawing and Illustration for Beginners | Tania Mason

Have you ever wanted to turn those little drawings and doodles into bigger illustrations? Tania Mason’s 8 week term class is the perfect place to help you get started! This course is for beginners who would like to explore illustration using a range of media. By the end of the course students will have the confidence and knowledge to approach many aspects of illustration, and come away with a definitive style that suits their interests, tastes and purpose.

What is illustration?

Illustration is creating an image to communicate a message or an idea. Illustration can be done in any medium as long as it is a visual representation of something. Examples of where you might find illustration might be in picture books, advertising, magazines, newspapers, instruction manuals, posters for gigs or movies, products like T-shirts or greeting cards and even in fashion and film.

What to expect

Tania will create a warm and inviting introduction to the illustrator’s toolkit. Students will:

  • learn to use a variety of materials including: ink, pen, charcoal, watercolour, gouache and mixed media.
  • learn fundamentals skills including mark making, creating texture, line, form, outlining, light and shade.
  • learn about developing compositions, discuss the importance of storyline, ideas, character and subject matter within the image making process
  • learn to embrace happy accidents
