Is this course right for me?

Not for beginners. Experience with watercolours/drawing is assumed.

  • Bring a few photographs of children you would like to paint. Please print them out to A4 size – it is very hard to work from an iPad or phone image. Make sure the photograph is clear, well lit and you can see the shape of the face clearly.
  • 1x pad A4 size cheaper student-quality watercolour paper(10-15 sheets). NOTE Tanya is very keen on good quality paper, as her style of painting requires the paper to be able to hold multiple washes of paint. The cheaper paper is fine for sketching and experimenting.
  • 100% cotton watercolour paper, medium grain: most often found brands are Arches, Fabriano. You can buy it in large sheets size 56x76cm at all good art stores. 1 sheet of this size is enough economical way to buy it, you can cut it down to smaller sizes. If you wish to purchase a pad of A3 size, go ahead and do this.
  • Your watercolour paints, brushes and palette*
  • One roll of kitchen roll absorbent paper
  • HB pencil, rubber, sharpener

*Please use quality paints such as Windsor & Newton, Art Spectrum, Daniel Smith, Schmincke cheap paints are a waste of money. A basic colour palette will include a cool and warm of each primary colour:
Lemon Yellow, Warm Yellow, Windsor Red (or cadmium), Alizarin Crimson, Prussian or Pthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue. If you have other colours, please bring those along.
