Fibre Art Workshop | Make a hanging basket with Nicole Robins

In this basketry workshop, you will learn about using natural materials from a Sydney urban garden environment to make a small hanging basket from natural fibres with Nicole Robins. Harvesting and preparing fibres will be discussed as well as resources for learning more. You'll discover how traditional basketry techniques merge with a love for organic forms and locally found fibres in Nicole's work.

We will use a cordyline base and learn the basics of randing and paired twining. Cordage making will also be demonstrated, and its uses for handles and garden ties.

This workshop is presented in association with the exhibition 'The Green Room - when nature moves in' a solo exhibition by Sydney fibre artist and 2020 Greenway Art Prize Winner, Nicole Robins.

Artist Statement

In the face of a global pandemic, our connections to the natural world have emerged as being crucial to our wellbeing. Roaming in nature reminds us that we are most at peace when we are aware of our interdependence on other life forms. At the same time, our need to act in response to the current climate crisis grows ever more urgent.

'Fibre art allows me to create an inner sanctuary that carries my love for nature inside and yet reminds us of all of our fragile coexistence.'
