Expressive Drawing in Mixed Media with Jody Graham

This one-day expressive drawing workshop is jam packed with projects and tasks to introduce students to expressive drawing in mixed media.

A workshop designed to activate and expand on your passion to draw and create. Learn innovative expressive drawing techniques to help you simplify complicated subjects and create contemporary unique artworks.

Participating in this one-day course you can expect to learn how to create dynamic compositions, explore mark making with a variety of material, develop your drawing skills and refine techniques to promote individual expression.

The workshop starts with a series of structured exercises to encourage new ways to approach drawing. Projects explore the power and subtleties that can be achieved in mark making. Drawing methods and ideas taught throughout the class will increase your knowledge about line, tone, composition and what to look for when developing your creative voice. Valuable information about materials used throughout the class will also be detailed.

I took a lot away from Jody's class. She started off saying that she wanted to add more to our toolboxes, well she added much more than that, she added a whole new vocabulary of mark making

h3. Is this course right for me?

This workshop is suitable to all levels of experience. Some prior experience with drawing is an advantage, however the workshop is suitable for enthusiastic beginners, intermedia and advanced. High School students in year 10 and above are encouraged to attend this workshop.

h3. Materials

Please bring the following materials for this workshop:

  • A1 or A2 cartridge paper for drawing exercises (approx. 8 sheets)
  • 1 x Saunders Waterford or similar, approx. 300gsm, 560 x 760mm CP
  • Optional - more good quality or variety of paper if preferred.
  • 4B pencil
  • Charcoal both willow and compressed charcoal (few sticks of each)
  • Black ink (Art Spectrum/Matisse or similar, need at least 50ml) *Optional Sepia Ink
  • HARD eraser.
  • 4 x plastic containers for ink. Can use empty yogurt containers, empty foil dog food containers, take away food containers etc.
  • Can of spray fixative
  • A few large bulldog clips to attach cartridge pad or paper to board.
  • Masking tape
  • Stanley Knife / cutting knife or sharpener
  • Roll of paper towel
  • Disposal gloves
  • Notepad and pencil/pen

Our 2022 workshops will all be delivered in our new, fully airconditioned Art Est Studios in the John Street Leichhardt Precinct. We are affectionately calling it East Village Leichhardt, as it’s on the border with Annandale! Click the venue link below for details.

Maximum of 8-12 students in all our classes depending which studio is used. Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need.
