Clay Sculpture | Year of the Dog

Course Overview

Take the Year of the Dog to a new creative level! In this workshop you will learn a range of techniques to sculpt a dog in clay. Take inspiration from a range of contemporary artists who sculpt animals as part of their practice including Nick Mackman, Todd Fuller, Dame Elisabeth Frink, Giacometti and more. This class is for all levels of artist as well as absolute beginners – you can come in with a planned project and photos of your dog or just be spontaneous and see what comes out. Everyone works on their own projects at their own pace guided by your tutor. Enjoy a day with a block of clay in a creative atmosphere! Fee includes kiln firing and clay.

What to expect

Students will

  • learn work from photographic reference material to develop their ideas
  • learn clay preparation techniques
  • learn a range of clay hand building techniques including modeling, carving that can be used for this and other projects
  • learn to use a range of clay sculpture tools
  • learn to prepare your sculpture for kiln firing


Students will be provided with clay as part of the course fee. The course fee also includes use of our clay tools, and kiln firing
Bring along a clear photograph of a dog you would like to use as reference

Is this class right for me?

Absolute beginners through to more experienced artists welcome. All you need is enthusiasm, a love of dogs, and the desire to sculpt something wonderful.
