Painting Flowers from Life | Oil Painting with Jackson Davies

In this workshop, you will learn to paint a bunch of flowers from life by demonstrating alla prima painting techniques. Alla prima refers to a direct painting approach where paint is applied wet on wet without letting earlier layers dry.

Simply pick some flowers from the garden for this lighthearted and stress-free workshop that will encourage you to continue painting throughout Spring and challenge you to see what you can produce in a short 3-hour online session.

What to expect

To start the session, students will receive a brief introduction to alla prima painting, colours, materials and equipment, and explore paintings by masters such as Sargent and Phillips Fox.

Then, your tutor will be painting alongside you, giving commentary as they go along and answering questions. Jackson will be discussing how to start the painting by establishing general tonality and laying down base colours, then demonstrating how to develop depth and colour by working directly on the canvas.

What will you achieve

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Understand and apply practical alla prima techniques to their work
  •  Enjoy the alla prima painting process
