Do you love to draw but would like to explore painting at the same time? Acrylics are a very forgiving medium and are easily used with charcoal, and other drawing media.

Work from a still life set up by your tutor, or bring you own subject matter / photos

Is this course right for me?

Beginners to intermediate.

Materials

  • You may like to set up your own still life or use reference photographs that you might like to paint.
  • Watercolour or printmaking paper taped to board. (no lighter than 300 gsm)
  • Your acrylic paints. Bring what you have, please use good ‘artist’ quality paints. Inferior paints do not produce good results. We recommend Matisse Derivan or Atelier brand paints.

Optional selection: Titanium White, Magenta or Alizarin red, Cadmium red, Pthalo Blue, Cerulean Blue, Yellows (cool and warm), Dioxyzine Purple

  • Drying retarder (optional)
  • Your brushes. A selection of large and small brushes. A large ‘hake’ brush is good for washes. A ‘rigger’ for expressive lines.
  • A palette knife for mixing paint
  • Your painting palette – a large flat surface is best
  • Large container for water
  • Rags or paper towel
  • Water spray
  • Drawing media of your choice including Charcoal – willow or compressed
  • Dry pastels/conte
  • Acrylic ink
  • Fixative (optional)
