Printmaking | Non Toxic etching with Seraphina Martin

Course overview:

Students will be introduced to aluminium and solarplate etching techniques using simple and non-toxic alternatives to the traditional etching processes. Solarplates use light and water instead of acids and solvents to etch your plate and create fantastic results. Through demonstration and practical exercises, students will:

  • learn about image composition and image selection
  • Learn to work with the solarplate.
  • learn to prepare the etching plate
  • learn methods of scribing into the etching plate
  • etch the plate in copper sulphate
  • learn how to achieve tone and different types of line
  • learn to print your image in different ways
  • create a stunning portfolio of limited edition artworks.

Is this course right for me?

This course is for all levels. The most important thing is an enthusiasm to learn a wonderful medium.

Materials

Please bring the following items to the first class:

  • sheet of 300gsm printmaking paper (stonehenge, BFK Rives or similar) (you will need more paper as the term progresses)
  • a box of disposable gloves
  • apron or old shirt
  • images and ideas to work from

You will need to purchase additional materials through the term which Seraphina will provide many of at low cost. This includes use of copper sulphate, ground, etching inks and scribes. Each student will also receive 1 x aluminium etching plate and 1 x solarplate. (Please allow approx $40 for this).

About our printmaking facilities

We have two printing presses suitable for intaglio and relief printing techniques. At our school we teach ‘safe’ printmaking techniques. That is, we don’t use acid baths or aquatinting boxes with resin.

Maximum of 12 students in all our classes Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need.
