Printmaking | Non-toxic etching and ways to print with Karen Ball

Course overview

In this two-day workshop students will be introduced to the ease and accessibility of a printmaking technique of etching using safe, non-toxic materials. Etching has been used for centuries by artists to create fine art prints, in recent years less toxic etching methods have been developed.
On day one students will learn

  • about image composition and image selection
  • preparing the aluminium etching plate
  • methods of scribing into the etching plate
  • etching the plate in copper sulphate
  • how to achieve tone and different types of line

On day two students will

  • be shown three totally different ways to print the plate. This will include printing the plate in more than one colour, colour roll ups and chine colle

Is this course right for me?

This course is for all levels, including beginners. The most important thing is an enthusiasm to learn a wonderful medium.

About our printmaking facilities

We have two printing presses suitable for intaglio and relief printing techniques. At our school we teach ‘safe’ printmaking techniques. That is, we don’t use acid baths or aquatinting boxes with resin.


Participants will be provided with one piece of aluminium (12cm x 12cm), copper sulphate solution, scribes, saral paper (to transfer images, if required), three colours of ink, a variety of Chinese papers for chine colle, rice glue. Please bring $20 cash to pay your tutor on the day.

Printmaking paper (56cm x 76cm) will be available to purchase for $5 per sheet.

Students should bring:

  • an apron
  • disposable gloves
  • a roll of paper towel or some rags
  • drawing materials and paper or visual diary
  • imagery for inspiration: Drawings, their own photographs etc that you might like to make into prints
